Shortcut to Fabulous Philanthropy

Pink RibbonEvery fabulous girl finds ways to give back! This month is the perfect month to give back as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We all have been touched by breast cancer in some way. We’ve had our own fight or scare or watched a friend, family member, co-worker, neighbor or loved one fight this disease.

Check out these stats on breast cancer: One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer besides lung cancer. About 90% of breast cancers are due not to heredity, but to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general.

As scary as these statistics are, there are constant advances being made as a result of breast cancer research and each advance brings new hope for a fabulous future free of breast cancer. In honor of breast cancer awareness month, I am giving you a shortcut to fabulous ways to support the fight against breast cancer.

Shortcut to Fabulous Halloween Fun

Every year, I try and find something new and fabulous to do for Halloween. Every year I complain that Miami does not have enough options and the ones that do exist are too crowded or too much of a “scene.” Despite my complaints, somehow I always find something fabulous to do on Halloween. This year, I decided to spread some Halloween cheer to those near and dear by listing my picks for some adult friendly and fabulous Halloween fun in 2009!

Mimoween Street Festival

Right after Overtown but the design district is the area known as the MIMO. MIMO has one of my favorite restaurants, Soyka at the famed 55th Street Station. This year they are going to have a street festival complete with costume contests, treat shops and more. Dine at Uva69, Soyka, Moonchine, or Le Café in costume and get a Free cocktail. This is my top pick for budget friendly, hip and comfortable Halloween high jinks. Click here for more info.

Down the Rabbit Hole at Warehouse 2016

Party the night way in costume (they are mandatory for entry) at this dark Alice and Wonderland themed event. All proceeds go to benefit UNICEF and tickets are only $10.  Event organizers promise a live DJ, drinks, dancing, costume contests, raffles, performers and more. WAIT! Before you run out and get your Alice and Wonderland themed costumes, note that organizers specifically state “Sorry, no Alice and Wonderland Themed Costumes” on their website. FYI- $100 buys you V.I.P. access. $5 buys you a raffle ticket and a cocktail. $3 buys you a raffle ticket with a soft drink. Event organizers advertise plenty of free parking. Hurry there are a very limited amount of tickets…only about 100 general admission tickets left  at the time of publication!!! Click here to order.

China Ween

South Beach’s famous China Grill on 5th is hosting a Halloween fest complete with a D.J., costume contest, dancing and fun. If you want a more low-key Halloween but still want to be hip…this is the place for you! The event starts at 9 p.m. so make your reservations early!

The 22nd Annual Vizcayan Museum and Gardens Halloween Sundowner

Yes it is a total scene. Yes it is too crowded. But one cannot write about Halloween in Miami without mentioning Vizcaya’s famous and legendary Halloween Ball. Tickets are steep at $125 and sell out well before the event. Note that the event is NOT on Halloween, but rather on October 24th. Event hours are from 8 pm to midnight (they let you party until about 1 am). Your $125 general admission ticket buys you access to the party with costume contests, an open bar and two live DJ’s. Remember parking is $10 for the main parking lot and $20 for the inside parking lot. Oh, and they have food but you have to pay for it. So, if you want to celebrate Halloween with 2000 of your closest friends, click the link here and order your ticket for Vizcaya’s Halloween bash.

Other Clubs Restaurants and Bars

Before Last Call sells tickets to Halloween events at Miami’s hottest nightclubs and bars. Tickets do not seem to be on sale yet, but you can sign up to be notified when they do go on sale. My picks from the selections that appear to be available would be B.E.D., Hotel Victor and Grass Restaurant and Lounge. Note, that you may be able to get tickets directly from the club, restaurant or bar. So, give them a call to see if you can score some Halloween fun by phone.

If you know of a Halloween event in the Miami area, let us know in the comments section. Tell all your friends to visit this website and decide which shortcut to Fabulous you’re going to take this Halloween!

Shortcut to Fabulous Miami Brunch

As a new feature, I am introducing Miami Monday, wherein every Monday I will provide shortcuts to fabulous living specifically for my loyal Miami readers or those lucky enough to be planning a trip to Miami. So without further adieu….

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon trying the fairly new brunch at the Mondrian Hotel’s Asia de Cuba. $42 buys you your choice of one entrée from their special brunch and a crack at the buffet selections. First of all, the setting is beautiful and fabulous! The hotel is located on the bay side of South Beach, so it has a more relaxed, unpretentious feel than the beach side.  There are still plenty of pretties, but the restaurant didn’t have the stuffy feeling that some other South Beach hotel restaurants can have. When you enter the restaurant, you can choose to be seated poolside with a great view of the water or inside which is like a set to a lavish white party. The Mondrian’s pool area is a beautiful modern Alice and Wonderlandesqe area with ivy-covered cabanas and fun, ornate, modern-baroque seating arrangements on the pool deck. Now, the most important part…the food. I ordered the Eggs Benedict with Serrano ham. The Serrano ham was a great idea in lieu of Canadian bacon, but it left the dish very salty. If you love salty flavors, you will love this dish. I tasted a bite of my friend’s lobster omelet ($5 extra by the way). It was scrumptious. However, the entrée dishes are the not the piece de resistance in my opinion. It is the buffet selections that are beyond fabulous. Inside the restaurant you will find a 20 foot spread of pastries, breads, salads, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit and desserts. The scrambled eggs were perfect, the fruit was sweet like candy, the Chinese chicken salad was full of flavor.  They had a large selection of desserts including creamy and delicious cheesecake, chocolate cake, chocolate brownie, chocolate mousse (yum!) and fruit tarts. A few of the desserts were completely worth every calorie and more, particularly the cheesecake and mousse. Overall, I give the brunch at Asia de Cuba four out of five fabs for its great location, fun setting and great food. It lost a fab as a result of the SOBE prices on cocktails and SOBE surcharges, although I was offered unlimited free refills of my diet coke. So, if you want to have a fabulous brunch on a lazy Sunday afternoon, take this shortcut to fabulous and make a reservation at the Mondrian’s Asia de Cuba.
