Shortcut to Fabulous Patterned Summer Wedges

wedge 1

I have a confession to make. I am kind of not a fan of summer fashion. I know it is really blasphemy to say something like that on a website that devotes so much real estate to fashion. Here’s the thing. So much of summer fashion revolves around swimwear and sandals, both of which scare me. Swimsuits scare me for obvious reasons, including exposing my well hidden cellulite, untanned and untoned legs. Sandals scare me because I just don’t think there is enough distance between my bare feet and the ground. When summer comes, I skip the sandals and opt for wedges. They create a thicker barrier between me and the ground (good for my germaphobe neurosis) and they make me a little closer to being average height (good for my ego). So, while every other online outlet and magazine is giving you the low-down on fab summer sandals, I present to you five fabulous patterned wedges to consider this summer:

A Little Color Cray Cray but in the Cutest Possible Way. $98 from Free People

Get two trends for the price of one with these tribal and color-blocked wedges $37.99 at Modcloth

Black and White in a fun summer print...enough said. $124.99 from Lori's Shoes.

The mix of black and brown makes this the perfect travel shoe in my book. No more having to choose between a black or beige/brown color palette when packing for a trip. $49.95 at Endless.com

Ahoy Fashionista....get on the nautical band boat with these uber cute wedges. $44.94 from DSW.

Shortcut to Fabulous Five Networking Tips

career-images

Being an entrepreneur and all, I have to get my hiney in gear and take advantage of any and all networking opportunities. The next great job or client can be found…well ANYWHERE. I have gotten job interviews meeting someone in a restaurant, gotten clients from striking up a conversation on the subway. The world is our oyster ladies and all you have to do is figure out how to harvest them.  If you are looking for a place to practice your networking skills, go where the busy entrepreneurs go…..go to get some more education and meet other busy entrepreneurs by earning an organizational development degree from an accredited school. Here are five helpful tips for networking a.k.a. harvesting your oysters:

1. Look the part. Never go anywhere where you might be seen not looking the part. If you are going to an event where a lot of industry heavyweights will be, spend the extra cashola for a blow dry or some extra time in the mirror. I never go to a big event without making sure I have a pulled together look. In fact, I have skipped events when I knew I didn’t have time to really pull myself together properly. It takes two seconds to size someone up, so make sure your 2 second glance is worth it.

2. Smile. If you are not sure what to say or how to strike up a conversation, smile and say hello. A smile is infectious. When I am in a situation where I feel socially awkward. I smile and say hello to the closest person. 9 times out of 10 a conversation will ensue. If the hello is followed by awkward silence, I stir my drink, bid them adieu and move on.

3. Find someone with a great outfit or accessory talking in a group and interject to compliment the item. This works EVERY time. I can’t tell you how many people I have met because I am not shy about compliments. When I see a woman sporting a fab look, I feel that she deserves to know someone noticed! I love when she is in a group chatting with people because I can just go up, say excuse me and tell her how fab she looks in front of everyone else. This usually gets me an “in” on the conversation and sometimes a new friend. We need to be supportive of other women and send the right energy out into the world and I believe giving a woman kudos on her personal appearance or style is a great way to do this.

4. Have business cards easily accessible. If you are on the hunt for a new job, order personal contact cards and have them easily accessible at ALL times. I am not the most organized gal in the world, so I load EVERY purse I own with business cards and refill once a month. I never want to be somewhere and not have a card ready. Added bonus: I re-discover fun purses when I am in refill mode.

5. If all else fails look for the lone soldier and go talk to them. We’ve all been to those functions where EVERYONE knows EVERYONE except for you and the bartender. When that happens to me and I am feeling especially awkward, I quickly scan the room and find someone standing by themselves. I beeline it over to them, smile, say hi and ask them how they are connected to the event. If I really can’t find anyone by themselves talking to the bar tender or someone at the venue can actually prove to be fruitful networking as well. I got a tip on a gig from a bartender at an event once.

The truth is you really never do know where you will meet someone. I have made business contacts in magazine section of Barnes & Noble, on the Subway, in a hair salon and even in the grocery store. Keep your eyes and ears open when you are out and about and don’t be afraid to speak up if someone says something that piques your interest.

*Please note I was compensated for a link, but I just took a webinar myself and take courses at my local community college and online frequently, so I am a big believer in this.

Miami Monday…Shortcut to Fabulous Way to Meet Mr. Right

Okay, well maybe you aren’t guaranteed to meet Mr. Right, but speed dating is a great way to potential meet Mr. Right and only have to spend five minutes with Mr. Wrong. I have actually lamented the fact that I got married before I got the chance to try speed dating. When I get in a fight with the hubs sometimes I  say, “if I we weren’t married i would be a best selling author” He looks at me with a quizzical look and then I explain, “Well if we weren’t married I would still be dating freaks and I probably would have tried speed dating which you know is the basis for a great storyline for a book.” Yup…I am that kind of girl…a little bundle of neurotic cray cray.

A few weeks ago in the interest of art, writing and helping a friend out, I got to “go undercover” and try speed dating. It was a blast! Obviously, I felt no pressure becasue i knew no one would be my match since my match was waiting for me a few blocks away at a party, but I really think with the right attitude this is the perfect way to meet someone. There were at least three good looking, professional men that I would set up with my closest girlfriends and two men that made great stories that are still getting me laughs.

Shortcut to Fabulous Cut-Out Shirt

hear cut out

I am going to talk about the thing that no girl wants to admit to herself or anyone else. The thing that almost every girl over 30 has dealt with in some shape or form…EVIL extra fat pockets. They just appear…out of nowhere! One day, you wake up, you look in the mirror and there they are: flabby arms, an extra pooch in your tummy or the worst of all of the evil fat offenders…back fat. I got the latter of the three. Effing back fat….really? Why me? Not fair! Sure, I eat a Kit Kat every day. Sure, I don’t really exercise. But I don’t deserve back fat. No one does! Anyhow, the whole point of this little tirade is that there are just certain trends one can’t wear when they no longer have perfect bodies. It stinks. It is not fun. However, when I find a trend I can’t wear, I don’t stop until I find a way in. I love when I find a away around it and with this cute little number from TopShop the elusive shirts with the cute little back cut outs are no longer off-limits for me. I am insane for this shirt and if you don’t have a perfectly toned back, you should be too! It is $76 and you can check it out here.

Shortcut to Fabulous One Piece Swimsuit

deneila

I was in SOHO taking care of some business a few weeks ago and got to spend some time with the designer behind DeNeila swimwear, Neila Grazoti Rudden. First of all, she should be a swimsuit model not a swimsuit designer…she is gorgeous. Not only is she beautiful and wildly talented, she is smart and super duper sweet too.

She got her start in fashion in Brazil and then moved to London where she studied and thought she would go the traditional career route. However, Neila had a gift and when she moved to New York City, she decided to share it with the world and began designing swimwear to suit every taste. She has everything in her collection from the teeny weeny bikini to the gorgeous, yet sexy one piece pictured here. The suits are a little pricey but you are paying for the best fabrics, amazing construction and attention to detail that really is stunning in person.

I have too much cellulite these days to really be a swimsuit kind of girl, plus I am so vein and afraid of aging, I have vampire syndrome and avoid the beach and beachwear, but when I saw this suit it inspired me to book a beach vacation and I don’t even have to starve myself the week before…why you ask. Well, fist of all this suit is super well constructed and nips, tucks and sucks in all the right places. Second the laser cut flower detail on the bust line is so delicate and gorgeous no one will be looking anywhere else but my chest. The suit is $269 but worth every penny. I don’t own it yet, but it is the next over $200 purchase on my list! You can check it out here.
