saving moneyIt is time to start getting ready for this year’s holiday season. S2F will be tracking all of the best deals and brining them to you, so check back often for the latest and greatest in gift giving ideas!

A great place to start making your list and checking it twice is member’s only sale sites. You can get a great gifts for everyone on your list at a fraction of the price in department stores. Tips for buying:

  • Start clicking early! Member’s only sale sites such as Rue La La and Gilt have start times for each boutique. Pay close attention to boutique start times and make sure you enter the store right on time to get the best selection and avoid disappointment. If you are on the fence about an item, add it to your cart to avoid having it snatched out from under you by someone else in cyber space. You can always remove the item later.
  • Pay attention to the fine print. Before you buy, check out the return policy. Some sales are final sale, while others allow for returns. Some sample sale sites like Rue La La even provide you with free return shipping if you are willing to return for store credit rather than a traditional refund.
  • Know your prices. You can get some amazing deals on Member’s Only sample sale sites, but don’t assume you are getting the best price on the market. I like to add items to my shopping cart and then quickly search online to make sure I am getting a good deal. I copy the item description and paste it into google to see if the item is being sold somewhere else. Sometimes even if the price is lower by a few dollars, the return policy of another online retailer is more generous. Also, don’t forget local discount stores like Loehmann’s, Marshalls, Neiman Marcus Last Call, etc.
  • Don’t fall into the Get it before its Gone trap. I recently went to a Gilt warehouse sale in Miami. I paid $5 for entry to the sale and when I arrived at the location there was a line out the door. When I stepped inside the warehouse, there was the same madness that ensues at any NYC designer sample sale. Women were franticly grabbing for dresses, shirts, skirts, etc and trying on clothes in the middle of the store. I felt the desperate “I have to get something now…look at all of these amazing deals” feeling creeping over me. I picked out a few dresses and took them to the make-shift fitting room. I tried on a Zac Posen dress on sale for $250 that was actually really cute but a little tight. I was in the middle of telling myself that I could lose a few more pounds and fit into the dress, when the seasoned and disillusioned sample sale shopper in me emerged and reality set in. I didn’t need this dress and it did not fit properly. If I bought it, “the amazing deal” would sit in my closet and serve as another object to promote the self-loathing that comes when a woman has a closet with clothes that don’t fit. The lesson: don’t buy it if there is any chance that it wont work for you or the recipient.
